The trust was established to promote literature by providing an annual award to authors of literary works, the central theme of which is concerned with mountains.

The Alpine Club, the world’s first mountaineering club, is Britain’s premier club for Alpinists. Since it was founded in 1857 its members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering development and exploration.
